July 2009 (This page is under
construction in preparation for the November 2010 municipal elections here in Cambridge, ON.)
The first pages will be devoted to issues from the last election, with comments on positions Councillors
presented and what has happened in the last 4+ years.
A major issue facing Cambridge Council is decision on the redrawing of the
Ward boundaries, with the intent of increasing the number by 2. Several Councillors have absolutely guaranteed that the expansion
of Council is a done deal. However, a proposal to expand the size of Council was rejected just prior to the last
election. The major reason for rejecting the increase in Wards was that "there was not time to educate the public."
Well, more than 3 years have
passed and precious little public education has started.
Take the test:
[1] What Ward do you currently reside in and who is your Councillor?
[2]
What Ward will the new boundaries put you in? Why do you not know about the possible changes? Your fault or Council fault?
Since most of the current Councillors voted to reject the previous increase in the
number of WARDS, perhaps their moods have not changed?
Would be nice for any citizens
who might consider running for election, if Cambridge Council would implament their planned Ward boundary changes asap to permit planning!
It will be interesting to
see if Council's new ward system makes any serious attempt to alter the former 3 city representation patterns of voting?
As it stands now, Councillor's frequently argue their viewpoint in
terms of "I represent _________", one of the 3 old city areas
Perhaps one purpose of new boundaries should be to homogenize the population tand reduce the effects of the
"old town" thinking? try to create new Cambridge wards that reflect equal per capita representation?
